STAFF POSITIONS
The EYCC  fosters awareness, appreciation and concern for Florida’s wildlife and environment through outdoor recreation and environmental education in a residential setting. All of our programs focus on environmental issues relating to South Florida.
Staff must be available from June 8th to August 8th. Staff is provided a competitive salary, housing and meals for the whole camp period.
The positions available are listed. Each position requires a specific amount of training and development. Please indicate on your application which position(s) best suits your skills and interest level. If you wish to apply for a position for which you do not have the certification for, please contact Chris Hill, Summer Camp Coordinator, at (561)686-6600 to discuss possible training courses available prior to camp.
A minimum age requirement of 18 is necessary for the Instructor positions.

Nature Seekers •  8 - 9 yrs old
Introduction to environmental programming and outdoor adventure activities

Environmental Interpretation, journaling and photography

Explorers • 13-14 yrs old
Environmental and Outdoor Living Skills with two overnight camp outs

Mariners • 13-14 yrs old
Marine Ecology Program - Must be at least 21 yrs old with a clean driver’s license

Canoe Instructor  All ages
Provide instruction and supervision for canoeing for all campers.
Candidate must be a canoe instructor or willing to be trained as one.

Lifeguard ○ All ages
Provide supervision for pond swimming for all campers. Must be a certified Lifeguard

Range Master • All ages
Provide instruction and supervision on archery range for all campers and shooting sports for camper sin the Rangers program. Must be a certified Hunter Safety Instructor or be able to complete one day NADA training course to be qualified by  May 2008

Fishing/ Sports • All ages
Provide instruction and supervision at fishing area and sport activities.
Willing to assist with other program areas

GROUP LEADER/ CABIN COUNSELOR: 16 POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Role involves assisting instructors during the day and staying with campers in the cabins at night. Must facilitate evening activities and manage group through the night. Group leaders provide a vital role in monitoring the campers at all times and providing the cohesive structure to a camper’s experience. Group leaders are housed with up to 16 campers and 2 junior counselors.

Our training schedule is as follows. Please be aware that the dates may change for the training as a direct result of the impact that weather has had on the academic schedule.

Junior Counselor Level I & Junior Counselor Level 2 Programs
The Everglades Youth Conservation Camp located in the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area, approximately 20 miles west of West Palm Beach, invites you to participate in our Junior Counselor Leadership Program.

Since 1998 we have offered a leadership program for youth ages 15 to 17 years. The goal of the program is to prepare youth for future staff positions at the camp.

Junior Counselor Level 1
The first year of the program focuses on the camp history and philosophy, policies and procedures, the role of the Junior Counselor, the various staff positions at camp, health and safety at camp, the camper’s world, communication, how to be an effective teacher, leadership, program organization, public relations and program evaluation. In addition, participants will be assigned to do various work related activities including assisting in the kitchen, dining hall, restrooms, and general grounds clean-up. Junior Counselors are supervised by the Junior Counselor Supervisor dedicated specifically to this group. 

Participants must select one of the two week sessions. Junior Counselors will stay from Sunday through Friday for each week of their experience. Junior Counselors are not permitted to stay at camp over the weekend period. Duties for camp begin at 1:30pm on Sundays.

Junior Counselor Level 2
The second year of the program focuses on preparing the participants for the skills they will need as staff members for the camp. Participants will be assigned to work with the instructors and group leaders to gain first-hand experience in dealing with camper issues. Junior Counselors are supervised by the Junior Counselor Supervisor dedicated specifically to this group. 

Participants must select one of the two week sessions. Junior Staff will stay from Sunday through Friday for each week of their experience. Junior Counselors are not permitted to stay at camp over the weekend period. Duties for camp begin at 1:30pm on Sundays.

Tuition for both programs is $225 for the two week session. Hours worked during each week are recorded as community service (40 hours per week).  Payment is made after the selection process.  Checks will be made payable to FAU.

DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY with the registration form.
All participants must attend a weekend day training session: Sunday June 1st. Drop off is Sunday between 8 and 9 a.m. with pick-up at 4pm. Parent(s) must participate in a one-hour information session from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. before leaving.

To apply for the JC 1 Program you will need:

  • Junior Counselor 1 Application Mail application, you cannot register on Thriva. Do not mail payment. Payment to be delivered on Sunday June, 1st during orientation.
  • Two letters of recommendation (Must be written on letterhead paper from your reference)
  • A personal letter explaining why you want to participate in the program

To apply for the JC 2 Program you will need:

  • Junior Counselor 2 Application Mail application, you cannot register on Thriva. Do not mail payment. Payment to be delivered on Sunday June, 1st during orientation.
  • A personal letter explaining why you want to participate in the program

Application Deadline: May 5th, 2008

Final registration and medical information forms will be mailed upon acceptance into the program. Forms are to be completed and turned in along with full payment on the Junior Counselor Training Day, Sunday June 1st .

Positions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis when determining weeks of attendance. An incomplete application will delay your selection into the program.
