What is the Pine Jog Fellowship?
Pine Jog Fellowship: Cultivating Community Involvement and Environmental Leadership. This innovative program earns students college credit and provides you with valuable work skills and community service experience. The program provides an opportunity for students to help their local community and environment while learning about environmental issues associated with South Florida. You also will serve as mentors as you lead school-aged youth in designing and implementing an environmental community action project of their own.
Semesters
- The first semester is Summer B and consists of six day-long field trips and guest lecturers throughout Palm Beach County focusing on regional environmental issues
- During the Fall semester Fellows work in pairs to design and implement their own environmental service projects and attend meetings once a month from 9am-4pm at Pine Jog Environmental Education Center
- During the Spring semester Fellows use their experience to work with local children in an after school setting (2 hours a week) and attend meetings once a month at Pine Jog Environmental Education from 9am-12pm. Fellows can work alone or in pairs for this semester.
College Credit
- High school students are required to register for all three 4000 level credit courses
- College students have the option of receiving credit from FAU for each semester for a total of 9 credit hours. The credit may count towards your major if your advisor approves the credits.
- Fellows have also used this program to satisfy the internship requirement in their college coursework.

How Do I Apply?

Dual enrollment Information
During the first semester, fellows will participate in a special topics course on sustainability issues which includes the following:
- Welcome Ceremony July 31st, 2010
- One week of first hand exploration of sustainability issues, August 2nd- 6th, 2010
- An opportunity to receive 3 credits from FAU's College of Education
During the second semester, fellows will:
- Work individually or in teams to complete their own community project relating to a local environmental issue
- Training in the Earth Force Community Action and Problem Solving (CAPS) program,
- Develop a portfolio on their chosen issue
- Complete a program evaluation
- Meet monthly to share the progress on their projects. (See course calendar.)
- Have an opportunity to receive 3 credits from FAU's College of Education
In a third semester, Fellows will work individually or in teams of two to facilitate a group of school-aged youth in learning about environmental issues and undertaking their own service learning projects using the Earth Force process. Fellows will also meet monthly during this semester and mentor their youth groups at least two hours per week. Project assessment and tracking will be part of each Fellow’s responsibility. Fellows will develop a portfolio on their youth action project. Interested students are able to earn 3 credits from FAU's College of Education for participating.
When Does the Program Begin?
The 11th group of the Pine Jog Fellows: Cultivating Community Involvement and Environmental Leadership formally assembles on July 31st, 2010.
Why Should I Apply?
Becoming a Pine Jog Fellow will reward you both personally and professionally with many valuable experiences. The program is designed to assist you in acquiring real world leadership, facilitation and teaching skills. You will:

- The ability to earn up to 9 hours of college credit is also an option.
Who Are We Looking For?
We are looking for students interested in political science, urban planning, environmental studies and education, but also anyone interested in environmental issues. Candidates for The Pine Jog Fellowship Program must have a social security number, be at least 16 years of age, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, pass the CPT (if appropriate, GPA & CPT requirement may be waived), have excellent oral and written communication skills, be a team player, like working with young people and be able to pass a background check through the School District of Palm Beach County. All applicants must have a written recommendation from at least one of their professors or teachers. Needs-based transportation assistance may be available.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What if my GPA isn’t a 3.0?
- Go ahead and apply and if the rest of your application is strong, you can still be accepted into the program.
- Where are the meetings?
- Almost all meetings are at Pine Jog Environmental Education Center which is in West Palm Beach at the corner or Summit Blvd and Jog Road.
- What if I already know I would have to miss some/a meeting?
- You are allowed one excused absence per semester.
- Do you help people find youth groups to work with?
- Yes, we can help you find a group that is convenient for you.
- Do all parts of my application have to arrive at Pine Jog by March 26, 2010?
- It is absolutely necessary for your actual application to arrive by March 26, 2010. If you are not able to get your references in by then, make a note on your application that your references will follow your application.

Dual Enrollment Eligibility
The Pine Jog Fellowship provides an opportunity for high school and college students to earn college credit through Florida Atlantic University’s College of Education. College students will need to register as they would for any other FAU course. The high school students participating in Dual Enrollment will need to read the following information and follow all of the steps outlined below to ensure eligibility for dual enrollment.
To be eligible for participation in the Pine Jog Fellowship Dual Enrollment Courses a student must have:
- Completed their freshman year of High School,
- Achieved a high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher (based upon an unweighted 4.0 scale),
- Taken one of the following tests and scored at least:
- SAT: Verbal 440; Math 440 (NOT PSAT)
- ACT: Reading 18: English 17; Math 19
- CPT (Accuplacer): 83 Reading Comprehension; 83 Sentence Skills and 72 Elementary Algebra
- Satisfied any course prerequisites
- Received approval of the high school principal or designee
Participating students are required to pay the dual enrollment fees associated with each course using their OASIS account. Late fees will be assessed if students fail to pay their bills by the University deadline. Students must earn at least a "C" in all college work attempted to remain in the program. Students are responsible for their own transportation and any parking, traffic, and library fines incurred.

High School Non-Degree Application Form
MUST BE TYPED ONLINE OR WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
- Needs to be completed by the high school student.
- NO documentation is needed.

High School Non-Degree Residency Classification Form

See information below for completion of the form.
- Florida Resident Classification sections needs to be completed by the parent/guardian. Residency is based on the parent/guardian of the high school student and the information provided is based on parent/guardian.
- Documentation is needed with copies.
- Citizenship section -- MUST BE CHECKED -- If the parent/guardian or student is a resident alien, copies of the front and back of the Resident Alien card are required. Also indicate the country of citizenship on the copies.
- Print form
- Parent/Guardian must sign the Affidavit section and date.

The FAU Immunization form cannot be typed online--print out pages and complete
- High school student and parent sign Section D. Parent signature required for Section B if applicable.
- For Section A, B & C
- If the student has copies of records that are acceptable (with the appropriate immunizations and physician's signature and office stamp); attach these copies to the immunization form, the physician signature is not needed. Also acceptable is high school printout of inoculations with high school stamp.
- If the student does not have copies of records, then Sections A, B & C must be completed by a physician and also signed and stamped.

After downloading and completing the above three forms, obtain and complete the required high
school form from your guidance counselor or HS Dual Enrollment Coordinator.

Please obtain a Palm Beach County Dual Enrollment Permission Form from your high school.
You can only be registered for courses listed on this form and approved by your guidance
counselor. A Book Voucher is not required for this program. The Pine Jog Fellowship is a three
semester program. Each semester, the student will need to obtain and turn in this form.
PLEASE do not detach any pages from these forms keep intact.
