Dear
Teachers,
Pine
Jog Environmental Education Center is in the process of
having a new environmental education center and a Palm
Beach County School District K-5 elementary school being
built on fifteen acres of our property during the
2007-2008 school year. Because of construction
considerations, we are not booking any field trips to
our property during the 2007-2008 school year.
However, we would like to invite you to participate in
our newly developed Schoolyard Inquiry Programs that
turn your students into schoolyard scientists. Pine
Jog’s professional education staff will facilitate six
different inquiry based programs that are offered within
three grade level categories.
K-1:
“Looking at Leaves” and “Camouflage Chase”
2-3: “My Survival Toolbox” and “Litter Patrol”
4-5: “Cool It” and “Hitching a Ride”
If
your school is categorized as a Title 1 School, you may
be eligible for these programs AT NO COST through
a grant provided to Pine Jog from the Palm Beach
Cultural Council. For schools who do not qualify for
assistance, the cost per class is as follows:
1st class visited on any given
day: $100.00
Subsequent classes visited on the same day:
$50.00
Programs are scheduled on a first come, first serve
basis. We will continue to schedule programs until all
spots have been reserved. If you are interested, or
would like more information, please contact Emily Van
Arkel at
vanarkel@fau.edu or at 561-686-6600.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Pine
Jog Education Team
Grades: K-1
“Looking at Leaves”
In this program children will explore their schoolyard
and become scientists conducting field research to look
for different kinds of leaves. They will make
observations using scientific tools, analyze their
results, and then create conclusion sentences.

Camouflage Chase: Why are Animals
Different Colors?”
This program explores the animal kingdom and the amazing
adaptation of camouflage. The students explore their
schoolyard for examples of camouflage, record their
findings on data sheets, and draw conclusions.
Grades: 2-3
“Litter
Patrol”
Students will become schoolyard scientists investigating
the different types of litter that can be found in the
area. The students will venture out into the schoolyard
to collect and evaluate the different types of litter
that they find. They will then interpret their data by
creating a graph and answering questions.
“My
Survival Toolbox”
Students will learn about different adaptations that
animals and humans have to help them breathe, get food
and water, move, and protect themselves. They will
observe real live snails to learn about the many
adaptations that help them to survive. The students will
use observation skills to explore the snails and
critical thinking skills to interpret their findings.
Grades: 4-5
“Hitching
a Ride”
The students will explore their schoolyard as schoolyard
scientists for examples of how seeds travel. They will
simulate how burrs attach to animal fur to increase
dispersal. They will compare two different types of
habitats (mowed vs. un-mowed grass) and then interpret
their results by answering questions and drawing a
graph.
“Cool
It”
Students will conduct an experiment that looks at the
effects of temperature on lizards. They will be using
thermometers to simulate lizards in order to watch how
the sun and shade can dramatically change the temperate
of these cold-blooded creatures. The students will then
analyze their results by creating a graph and answering
critical thinking questions about their data.
